Having looked at a few popular movie magazine covers i feel as if i have now developed my understanding on how they are constructed and what they should include. I have also been able to identify the typical codes and conventions of movie magazine covers particularly those who adapt their magazine cover to fit the genre of the movie they are focusing on. Looking at all magazine covers together they all have many similarities for example, the use of one large centred image. This image tends to fill the whole page and consists mainly one character but this all depends on the movie they are looking at. Most of them also have the character(s) looking straight at the camera, making eye contact with the reader in some cases putting them in their shoes and in a way building a connection with this character. There is nearly always a large headline which focuses on this character normally stating the film they star in and a catchy tag line or something interesting, maybe a exclusive film review to entice them buy this product. Around the page there are normally other tag lines and subheadings advertising other films featured inside and occasionally pictures to illustrate. The use of the word "exclusive" is used a lot, perhaps to entice the audience to purchase this magazine because if this information is exclusive to them, it is highly unlikely they will find it else where.
Most magazine covers also use a range of fonts to single out the important pieces, sometimes by putting the font in bold and a different colour to the rest of the text works. All depending on whether the magazine does base the cover around a particular film the colour scheme varies but either way they normally use colours to contrast each other which is what i am going to include in my own magazine. As i like the idea basing my cover around my film this will most probably be colours which fit the horror movie genre. Like all magazine covers i will also include a bar code which is normally used for retail use to make it look professional and survey my target audience to find an ideal selling price for my magazine.,by doing this i hope to find a reasonable and realistic price tag . I also aim to add a website address to my cover as nearly every product iv looked at has one. Websites are normally used to help promote the product further and to give their target audience more information but in a different format.
So having looked at a range of magazine covers i feel as if i have been able to develop my own ideas for my own product and have found ways to make it more successful to my target audience. I am also hoping to survey them to get some feedback on what i should name it and how much it should cost to get some ideas from them as they would be potentially be buying it. I am also looking to base my magazine around my teaser trailer, which happens to be the horror movie genre so i will look at including elements of my previous piece of work into this cover. So overall magazines have a basic layout and format which i will begin with and then develop it further to make it my own.
