Photo Ideas

Photo Ideas

Now having looked and analysed movie posters from the horror movie genre and written down some ideas for my own, i have taken some pictures which i could use for my poster. I chose to shoot them all at night so they fit in with my teaser trailer, although this wasn't necessary due to it only being a trailer i could really take pictures of anything as long as it fits with my storyline. So that's what i decided to do, i didn't want my photographs to be the same as my trailer so i decided to take different pictures so they tell their own story.

Picture One:

Starting with the shot of a pair of eyes, these not only fit in with the film but they connect well with my trailer title "The Vigil" meaning being watched or the watcher. So i thought eyes would be good for this, i chose to take this shot slightly above the persons head (a slight high angle shot) so eyes look as though they are glaring at the camera as they look up. I decided to photograph women's eyes as it adds a twist to the film, normally you would stereotype a killer to be male but if this were to be featured on my poster it would leave the audience questioning whether they are eyes of a victim, character in the film or even the murderer. The thing which i like the most about this picture is the way the eyes connect with the camera, it is as though they are looking at you which is the effect i wanted to create as it puts the audience in a position where they feel uncomfortable and quite scared. If i were to use this picture on my poster i would like to maybe use a black background to make the eyes stand out and fade it into maybe a camp fire which links it to the final clip on my trailer.

Picture Two:

For this photo i decided to use the gate which features in my teaser trailer but take a still shot of the victim behind it looking out into the darkness. I decided to take the photo from the side and a mid shot so you you can see the eyes are focusing on something, and you can not only see the person but the background is also visible showing the rest of the gate and some trees showing he is outside in the woods. Being the hands are gripped onto the gate perhaps in hope to get away from someone it gives off an edgy effect to the audience making them tense.

Picture Three:

In this photo i have included a lot of background and very little hand but i think this gives of quite a good effect. The fact that the soil is saturated with blood showing a bloody scene and the slight view of a hand shows the victim this blood has come from. For the hand i also decided to put blood on it and some mud to show maybe they were struggling to get up from the ground etc. Personally i don't think this would really work for my poster partly because its landscape (which could be changed) but there isn't enough going on and doesn't really say much to the audience.

Picture Four:

This photo is quite similar to the one before it includes the same character and gate but is shot from a different angle. I decided to take this from the front to see if it created a different effect, this was true because when its from the side you're wondering what he's looking at and what hes doing but here, we don't know what the character is doing. But i do like the eye contact between the character and the camera as if it were on a poster it would automatically connect with the audience. You could also say that this picture looks like he has given up hope of getting away and is just waiting for something to happen. If i were to use this in my poster i would crop it to make it portrait and maybe include a tag line above the head, and a large title below.

Picture Five:

This picture was taken just as a random location shot but this could also work for my poster as it doesn't give too much away, it looks quite low budget, linking with my trailer and still looks quite eerie and spooky as you don't know what is hiding in the trees. To create this into a poster i would add a title perhaps through the middle or at the bottom and a tag line and institution logo. Using photo shop i could merge this with one of my other photos and just experiment to see which i like best.

Picture Six:

Here i decided to to take a close-up shot of a hand clinging onto the ground or even a branch on the floor. I decided to cover it in fake blood, to create a creep and spooky effect. Being blood is a common convention in the horror movie genre and is used quite a lot in movie posters i though it would be a good idea to use blood in my own work.

Picture Seven:

The whole idea behind this picture was to capture someone trying to hold onto this trunk of a tree for their life and another hand trying to pull it away as if they are trying to kill them. Both of their hands are covered in blood, one more so than the other, mainly because they are seen to be the killer. One thing which i particularly like about this photo is the contrast between the colours, the Green leaves and the Red blood mainly.

Picture Eight:

The idea behind this photo was to capture a victims hand struggling to get up or perhaps crawling or reaching for help. I chose this location mainly because it is a woodland area and is also quite muddy. So we then get the contrast between the Dark Brown mud and the Red blood covering the hand. You can also see a bit of the other hand in the same position making it look mo0re realistic being there's two hands, this also suggests the person is still alive as they still have a grip.

Picture Nine:

For this photograph i chose it from my original movie trailer as it was difficult and very time consuming to create another fire, i experimented around to see how i could get this image and found the best quality and easiest way to capture it was by print screen and cropping it in photoshop. The thing which is quite good about this picture is the contrast between the Orange fire and the dark background making the main image stand out. The main reason i chose this shot of the fire is because it is quite a high flame and could work well with one of my ideas, perhaps by putting eyes above the fire fading into a pair of eyes. Linking with both elements the fire symbolising the camp and the eyes symbolising the watcher or killer.
