Fonts and Colour Schemes

Before i began to create my magazine i thought it would be a good idea to get the opinion of some fellow students on the fonts i am looking to use. I am looking for quite a professional font to use which i can possibly add effects to , to link to the theme of the movie as this is quite common in movie magazines like the Batman magazine cover i analysed, they have used their original font but have added Blue electrical bolts to the font to fit with the film. To find professional yet effective fonts i looked on a free font website where you can download copyright free fonts (http://www.dafont.com/). To see which font suited my magazine cover (which i am still developing) the best. So i print screened each font i have chosen to look at with my magazine cover so far and asked people to tell me which one they thought looked better. When choosing a font i had to take into consideration that it should be readable yet effective when relating to the movie genre. I chose to colour all of them Red as it helps to make the font stand out from the background image and capture the audiences attention. I added effects on Photoshop to develop each of these by adding shadowing to the outside and inside the lettering. So here are the fonts i asked people to vote on:

So having had 15 people survey i came to a conclusion on which font would be best to use, here are my results:
Picture One - 2
Picture Two -2
Picture Three - 1
Picture Four -4
Picture Five - 6

I found that asking my target audience which font they preferred helped me a lot, not only to decide on which one to use but i also took into consideration their opinions. After getting them all to vote i came to choose font number five, in my opinion this is the one which i favored and is obviously popular with others too. It is big bold and eye catching which is what i wanted to achieve as when i looked at other magazines they used the same sort of thing.
Colour Schemes
Looking at other magazine covers i noticed that some special editions apply the movie to their cover, for example if it is a sci fi film then they have adjusted the font to fit the picture and genre but kept the original style but have adapted it slightly. I like this idea particularly especially if it is focusing on one film in particular. So for the colour scheme i would like to use the colours i have used through out my poster and teaser trailer, not only to link them together but because i would like to adjust this magazine to the horror movie genre, but keeping it professional at the same time. I am going to use a range of colours, perhaps a dark background to make Red, white and grey colour fonts stand out making them look bold and eye catching. The colour Red to me symbolises a warning and blood which is often used in this genre so this would be a good colour to use.
